World Travelers

As a final activity to wrap up our unit on expository writing "Just the Facts", the class has traveled to 5 different parts of the world as scientists.  Each day, we boarded a plane with our passports and took off! We visited the polar region in Antarctica, the dessert area of Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, the rain forests of South America and the forest region of the United States. Each day, the students participated in themed centers. The pictures below are of our trip to the desert to study the meerkat and other desert animals.
Here we are writing our word wall words and vocabulary in desert sand.
In this center, we are creating African collar necklaces. The picture below shows us sorting and identifying desert animals.

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, I just want to remind staff that we do not celebrate with food. Students may share Valentine cards with the class, but they must not have candy attached to them. Instead of food, students can participate in a variety of creative activities during holiday celebrations. Non-food tokens such as stickers or pencils can be used to celebrate while promoting a healthier school environment.

Thank you for your support!

The Daily Five: read to someone

Hello All!  As we move into the new year, I have restructured our Literacy block to include the aspects of the Daily Five Literacy Program.  The Daily Five consists of 5 activities that encourage literacy development, gives students some choice in their activities, and allows me to meet with small guided reading groups that are differentiated to meet individual needs.  Each day, your child will have an opportunity to Listen to Reading, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing and Word Work. I have attached pictures of students engaged in the various activities.

Read to Someone: Students sit with a partner or volunteer to read a chosen book. This is Mrs. Harmon, a volunteer working with students. I will be looking for a volunteer to help out on Fridays from 10:00-11:15. If available, please let me know. Thank you!
